Accidents at School
In the event of an accident at school where a child falls ill or needs medical attention, the following steps will be taken:
1. attempt to call parents or emergency contact
2. attempt to call child’s physician (if applicable)
3. if necessary, the school will call 911 and the child will be taken to the Emergency Department at BC Children’s Hospital
Emergency Procedures
The school is prepared for various types of emergencies including: fire, earthquake or lockdown. We have and maintain an emergency plan specific to each facility.

Emergency Procedures

Administration Role
- Maintain records of emergency training and maintenance of supplies and equipment - Maintain student emergency forms and auathorized release records - Lead the response to incidents and designate alternates in absence - Ensure the supervision of children until released to parents or designated alternates - Liase with emergency response providers Staff Role - Conduct monthly evacuation drills - fire and earthquake - Conduct a Lockdown Drill twice per year (the primary focus is on empowering students to be prepared and flexible in order to adapt to all disasters and emergencies) - Participate, review and assist in the development of emergency plans and procedures - Attend and participate in emergency training and exercises - Renew Emergency First Aid certification every 3 years - Provide First Aid as needed - Distribute Comfort Kits and reassure students - Ensure the supervision of children until released to parents or designated alternates |
Parent Role
- Maintain children’s records, including the family out-of-area contact, Emergency Information and designated alternates for pick-up
- Prepare a Comfort Kit for your child to be kept at school
- Practice emergency preparedness with your child at home
- Do not call the school (we may be trying to reach Emergency Response Services)
- When safe to travel, go to the school to collect your child
- If you are unable to reach the school, contact a designated guardian on your authorized pick up list to collect your child
Student Role
- Participate in monthly Fire and Earthquake Drills
- Participate in Lockdown Drills twice a year
- Remain calm, listen to the Teachers and follow their directions
Fire Drills
During a Fire Drill, students practice how to vacate the school building quickly, quirtly and safely in case of fire. The classes practice following the commands: STOP – DROP – ROLL, STAND – stand and remain silent, and MARCH – teacher guides students to exit the building in an orderly manner to the predetermined point of safety.
Earthquake Drills
During an Earthquake Drill, The children practice how to DUCK, COVER and HOLD. After the shaking has subsided, the class counts to sixty. The teachers will assess the situation and direct students to exit the building through the safest route.
WMS is equipped with comprehensive emergency safety kits including a supply of emergency water and food. These items are stored in a locked cabinet in our backyard play area. Parents have the option preparing a personal Comfort Kit for their child. This involves sending a small, clear sandwich sized Ziploc bag containing items that may comfort their child in the event of an local emergency such as an Earthquake. Items may include a letter, a family photo, a small stuffy and non-perishable snack (like a granola bar), etc. The comfort kit will be kept at school for the year. Lockdown Drills
During a Lockdown Drill, the teachers will alert the children that we will be now practicing for a Lockdown. The children are guided quickly and quietly into our safety zone area. One teacher ensures all doors and windows and are locked and blinds are shut. The children are instructed to be as quiet as possible until the lockdown is over and it is safe to retsume our normal activities.
Emergency Relocation Sites
It may be necessary for Staff and students to relocate in an emergency (ie. fire). If feasible, information regarding our neighbourhood relocation site will be posted on the school entrances.
